The plot for the movie was that, in Rome, where Salvatore Di Vita, a famous film director is being told by his girlfriend that someone named Alfredo from his childhood has passed. Then, as the girlfriend asks him who Alfredo is, Salvatore flashes back to his childhood. His childhood is the time after the World War II, when Salvatore was six years old and he spends his time at the movie house, called Cinema Paradiso.

He was called Toto at that time and he becomes friends with the projectionist, called Alfredo, who lets him watches movies and even teaches him how to operate the projector.

The movie house catches fire one day and Salvatore saves Alfredo’s life, but the accident causes him to become blind. Now the task of movie projectionist becomes Salvatore’s.

The movie continues with scenes from the time when Salvatore was in high school and still a movie projectionist at Cinema Paradiso. The blind Alfredo still helps him with advice with how to use the projector and soon Toto gets in love with Elena, daughter of a wealthy banker.

They stay together, but at her father’s disapproval, their family moves away. Salvatore needs to go and enroll the army and all the letters that he writes for Elena are not sent to her. When he returns from the army, Alfredo advises Salvatore to leave the small town called Giancaldo and follow his dreams.

Now, Salvatore returns for Alfredo’s funeral and meets Elena’s daughter and discovers that she waited for him for a while. He also gets a movie reel from Alfredo’s widow, which he watches when he returns back in Rome.

The scenes on the movie were all the censored scenes, that have been ordered out of the movies, made into a movie. Salvatore then realizes that he is at peace, finally.
